Furthermore, the "videographer" in this case wasn't a citizen with the rights of a law-abiding citizen, but an ex-con who was released on parole with conditions he may have violated by uploading that video to YouTube. That means all bets as to his "rights" are off, as criminals lose certain rights (such aa voting, communicating with their victims, etc) as a direct result of their actions.

'occasional eccentricity and abnormal attitudes' of Jehovah's Witnesses in regard to the Anti-Islam VideographerÂ’s First Amendment Right to Insult Religion cited

why the united states must either get behind the anti-islam videographer's first amendment right to insult religion (and politics and politicians and every other power, large or small), or lose what matters most.

The fact that Jehovah did not do so indicates that he does not view it as vital information for us now.
But it IS vital for God to warn us not to mix wool and linen? Speaking of which, why don't JWs worry about THAT one, nowadays?
That reminds me: anyone else remember looking at food labels on lunch meat (eg oscar mayer balogna) for the presence of an ingredient called 'sodium erythorbate', and not buying it because of the mistaken assumption that the ingredient was derived from erythrocytes, red blood cells? JW version of science, LOL!

I Want Proof Jesus Even Existed
by Farkel indon't bother me with the josephus addendum.
i've already seen that debunked.. i am quite aware of the fact that the only evidence of jesus comes from his own followers who didn't even bother to write down his life for decades after jesus "died.
" don't know about you, but if i saw all that shit, i would have gone home and written three books about it that same day!.

I, for one, enjoyed the read, as it served as a great example of the thinking process historians (and really, all of the scientific disciplines) use, with a well-defined methodology to weigh alternative hypotheses before one is accepted as theory.

I read a ton, and there is no answer to this question. It can't be simulated. The theories that DO exist are ridiculous to me. Mutations on the backs of crystals? Hmmm...
Oh, yeah, EP: I overlooked that, as it's proof that CA doesn't have clue of what he rejects simply because it seems ridiculous to him (and no kidding, discussions over the quality of various translations of Flaubert's Madame Bovery seem nonsensical to me, too, since I don't speak French, and hence don't have enough knowledge of the subject to form or hold an informed opinion; I only can parrot).
CA, mutations don't occur "on the backs of crystals". You're confusing different topics here ("mutations" refer to a change in DNA, which arises randomly. "Crystals"? I suppose you may have heard about protein synthesis occurring on crystalline substrates, acting as catalysts).
Some people study chemical reactions that can occur on crystals; others have to be content to see crystals as magical stones which point to God.

Humanism is like this. It's all about self. There is nothing greater than self. And self dictates everything. There is no greater power outside of ourself, and many (though not all) come to this conclusion because their concept of God did not respond in the way and speed that they thought He would. So He must not exist. I see it over and over again. Yes, I acknowledge that there are those that use science to support their non belief in God. But for many people science was not the reason they stopped believing, but it was a way to explain why they already didn't believe. I'm not saying that is everyone, but I have met many people that are this way.
Blah, blah, blah.
Back at ya', slick, as you're simply kissing the arse of the Big Boss in the Sky, just like any other self-serving wahoo who plays the power game to get a leg up on others.
Unless you haven't heard, JWs abandon their own children by shunning, because THEY personally want to get into the New System, with or without their children (and they can always have more; God will bless them ten-fold, or so the Bible promises). It's not just the JWs, but endemic to the OT:
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his first-born son, since he knew who buttered his bread (YWHW) and knew when asked to jump, the proper answer is to ask "how high"? What did Abraham stand to lose? Nothing. YHWH had promised him that his progeny would form the lineage to serve as rulers of great Nations (kinda a big deal, in a patriarchial time). If God said to kill a child, there must be a good reason: off with his head! Unquestioned loyalty is the lesson.
Same with Job: YHWH tested him by wiping out his children, etc, but rewarded him in spades for his loyalty. Still damned self-serving, as Job didn't want to miss out on the big pay-out in the end, just like suicide bombers think they'll get 70 sky virgins. Same appeal to human greed, since it's the same ancient story.
See, Christianity is far more self-serving and narcissistic than humanism ever could manage: we accept that when bad things happen, that's it. Morality is NOT based on phantom hopes of a reward, but whatever good results in the here and now. And in case you haven't noticed, you can thank science, not religion, for all the good things we enjoy in modern times. The proof is all around you (unless you're too rapped up in your religious rhapsodic delusion to notice).

Teenage son's last WT comment. Major sphincter puckering on my part.
by Open mind ini thought maybe some of us might enjoy something light-hearted to start the week off.
at dinner last night my teenage son reminded me of the last kh meeting he attended with me about a year ago.
he is a big fan of christopher hitchins and self-identifies as an atheist.

Unfortunately, I think you were right: his comment was far too subtle for uneducated JWs to grasp, since they don't even understand that in the scientific realm, a "theory" is not unproven; a "hypothesis" is. And they actually DO think of themselves as 'critical thinkers', as most people do.
As the old saying goes, sarcasm is lost on small children and dogs (who just stare at you, just the same, LOL!), so the only answer is to not hang around a bunch of macaroons who don't know and don't care about facts.

If you walking down the street and someone had a heartattack, would you ignore them and fail to call the ambos until they said your name ?
JWs punish others with that same exact kind of tough "love", too, just like in the OT days, with shunning.
Back in Israelite times, they didn't even try to hide stoning under the cover of having "love" for the individual: they dehumanized the sinner and simply stoned them to death to "cut the person off" from the community, making sure the community as a whole remained untainted by unatoned sin (failure to punish the sinner threatened the survival of the entire community if God should blame everyone). Labeling it as an act of "love" is a Orwellian move designed to make the modern-day feeble-minded Xian palliate the painful cognitive dissonance of the disconnect between Jesus' "love one another" words and the observed outcome. It's a shame the NT doesn't one of his disciples asking Jesus a follow-up question, to address the contradiction of punishment with that foggy-brained "unconditional love" thing.
So while they cannot stone others (all those inferior man-made secular laws prohibit it, of course), JWs do practice something called "shunning", and sometimes the practice leads to it's desired outcome (if the person decides to grant them their wish to see them dead).

What Can We Do to Show How We Cared about Oompa?
by Band on the Run ini know others have posted on the original thread.
several people, including myself, would like to do something concrete to show our concerns re: his treatment by the jw, and how important he was to all of us here.
i suggested a handwritten note, on behalf of the whole community here, flowers, and perhaps a donation to a charity that helps people get back on their feet.

Send a card to the boys.
Curb your personal AGENDAS and CAUSES about the WTS. They don't care about that right now. They just lost their Dad.
Just tell Travis and Ty how much you cared for Eric or were helped/touched by him.
How old are they (approximately)? Pre-teens, teens, adults (presumably adults, since you said they're OUT)?

A funy thing happened to me ...
by scotoma ini suddenly realized that this board has the same methods at its disposal as the watchtower and it will use them.
and there's no appeal.. i am so saddened by this i feel like killing myself.
this was my last refuge of being able to discuss things that are on my mind.. and now i see there is no hope.

I always thought that if you don't like or agree with what a person says just tell them or even ignore them.
But, to trample on their sincere effort at communicating a deeply thought out idea... that's traumatic.
Heh, I was thinking the same thing today about how JWN is very similiar to JW's, with good folks jockeying to get a leg up on others, trying to establish a pecking order (based on seniority or whatever), demanding others think like they do, etc. You can take the person out of JWs, but unfortunately you cannot open their World view when it's been so inculcated into them. That's just human nature, and that's kind of the point: you are more likely to encounter those personality types, whether in JWs or ex-JWs.
I brought it up recently in the form of the hypocrisy of blaming the GB for every bad thing that happens, but not holding the R&F JW accountable when THEY shun others. Nope: every person is accountable for their own actions (if only to themselves).
I'd recommend you take a break from the board: there is OH SO MUCH MORE to life out there, besides the World of JWs and Ex-JWs. Focusing on both is negative energy for many people, since there is an air of people who feel victimized and helpless, focusing on what they lost and not empowered to do whatever it is they do to be satisfied with their lives to move on. We all need a vacay now and then, and see if you can find a new perspective, a new way of looking at the World, free from the media, and others, etc.
I wish you the best! This too shall pass....
